The RYA Start Yachting Weekend is a gentle, enjoyable introduction to life on the water—ideal for complete beginners who want to get a feel for sailing without diving in too deep. It’s designed to be welcoming and supportive, offering a real hands-on experience aboard a sailing yacht over two days, with an overnight stay on board. Whether you’re curious about sailing as a new hobby, looking for a unique weekend away, or simply want to try something different, this course provides the perfect starting point.

From the moment you step aboard, your instructor will take the time to help you settle in and feel comfortable. The emphasis is on creating a relaxed environment, where you can learn at your own pace and enjoy the process of discovering the basics. Before setting off, you’ll be guided through the essential safety procedures, familiarising yourself with the yacht, and learning how to move about safely on deck.

Once you’re under way, you’ll get involved in all aspects of sailing the boat. With calm and clear instruction, you’ll be shown how to steer under both sail and engine, handle ropes, hoist and adjust sails, and even help plan a simple course. There’s no pressure to get everything right—this course is all about trying things out, building confidence, and most importantly, enjoying the experience.

Time is also spent understanding life onboard. You’ll learn how to keep a lookout, tie a few useful knots, take part in basic seamanship tasks, and start to get a feel for how a crew works together. Evenings are usually spent moored up somewhere peaceful, giving you a chance to relax, enjoy dinner, and share the boat with fellow crew members. Sleeping aboard is a key part of the experience and offers a glimpse into what it’s like to live on the water.

What really sets this course apart is the atmosphere. There’s no need for previous sailing knowledge or any special gear—just bring your enthusiasm. Instructors are experienced, friendly, and genuinely enjoy helping people take their first steps into sailing. They understand the nerves that can come with trying something new and are there to offer guidance, reassurance, and support throughout the weekend.

By the end of the two days, most participants are surprised by how much they’ve picked up and how natural it starts to feel. Many leave with a real sense of achievement, and a good number find themselves already planning their next course. You’ll also receive the RYA Start Yachting certificate, which can be used as a credit towards the longer RYA Competent Crew course should you wish to continue your journey.

Whether you come on your own, with a partner, or as part of a group, the Start Yachting Weekend is a brilliant way to try sailing in a down-to-earth, friendly setting. You don’t need to be super fit, know any jargon, or worry about exams—just bring a bit of curiosity and a willingness to have a go. It’s not unusual for people to arrive a little unsure and leave completely hooked.
