Interview with a MOSS Student - Gustavo Reis - RYA Day Skipper

Interview

Hi Gustavo, thank you so much for taking the time for this interview. I am really excited to hear your replies ! You joined us for a beginners class early last year and now you have become a really proficient sailor with your successful completion of the RYA Day Skipper course :)

Q: So, let’s start from the beginning — how did your connection with sailing first come about?
A: Since a very young age, around 4 or 5 years old, I’ve been connected to the sea through my father. He has always been passionate about sailing, especially regattas, and that naturally became part of my childhood. Over the past 6 to 7 years, he started talking more seriously about his dream of owning a sailboat and possibly living while sailing around the world.

Q: That’s a pretty special influence — how did that shape your own interest in sailing?
A: Growing up with that vision, I realized I wanted to be part of it. More than that, I saw sailing as a way to share meaningful experiences with him and spend more time together. Since he didn’t yet have practical sailing experience, I decided to learn — not only for myself, but also so I could help him in the future.

Q: When you decided to learn, how did you go about choosing the right sailing school?
A: When I started looking for a sailing school, I contacted several options in the Netherlands. What made me choose Moss was mainly their approach and communication. From the very first interaction, I felt a genuine level of care, attention, and passion for what they do. They were always helpful, responsive, and clear in answering my questions, which made a big difference.

Q: And what was it actually like once you got started with the Competent Crew course?
A: My first experience during the Competent Crew course was quite unique and personal, as there were only two of us on board. Although we didn’t sail long distances due to weather conditions and the small crew, we had plenty of time to dive deeper into theory, discuss real-life scenarios, and practice essential maneuvers like mooring.

Q: I’m curious about your instructor — what was Marco like to learn from?
A: Regarding the instructor, Marco, it was a very impactful experience. At first glance, he may seem like a simple person, but once you start talking to him, you quickly realize his level of knowledge, experience, and intelligence — especially in navigation. He’s the kind of person who gives you confidence no matter the situation.

Q: Would you say his teaching style suited you? How did that feel in practice?
A: He has a more “old school” teaching style, which at times can feel a bit strict, especially for someone my age. However, it’s extremely effective. I never made the same mistake twice after being corrected by him. And at sea, where mistakes can have serious consequences, that kind of learning is incredibly valuable.

Q: Looking back on it all, how do you feel about the experience overall?
A: Overall, it was a very positive experience, both technically and personally, and it strengthened even more my motivation to keep improving in sailing.

Thank you so much Gustavo, it's been a pleasure.!  See you again soon.
