This is a course for anyone who wishes to use or who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand how to operate it. Misuse of, or sending unnecessary transmissions could interfere with essential radio communication or a distress alert.
In order to legally operate radio transmissions, a student must hold a minimum certification of the SRC or Short Range Radio Licence. This certificate also allows you to use equipment fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) functions which is commonly available on modern radio equipment.
A radio operator must hold a current certificate to operate the VHF radio. The SRC (Short Range Radio Certificate) is the minimum qualification required by law to operate the VFH / Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any vessel fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels
Upon the successful completion of this one day course, you will receive a Course Completion Certificate and can be eligible for direct examination. For MOSS Sailing customers, the exam is included in the course fee.
Please note that a one of payment for the licence fee of £70.00 is directly payable to the RYA.
Upon payment to the RYA, you will be sent the SRCAPP application form which facilitates application for the exam.
The course will be conducted and examined using radio simulators. The exam will also include a short written test.
The SRC course can be held in the classroom or online but the exam must be attended at the training centre.
A one off licence fee of £70.00 is directly payable to the RYA.
